The problem
Small manufacturers need inventory, orders, invoicing, and compliance, but every factory needs a different mix. Full ERP suites are heavy to adopt, and custom builds are slow to deliver and hard to maintain once each customer's version drifts apart.
The challenge
The platform had to let someone assemble a working factory workspace without writing code, while keeping each module independent enough to build, test, and ship on its own. I designed a composer that blocks a build when a required module is missing, and warns when an event has no publisher or an integration has no credentials. Accepting a composition enables modules in dependency order and generates an overview dashboard. A second canvas chains events to actions, such as raising an invoice when a dispatch is logged.
System Design
Generic system view: the factory and flow canvases feed a module kernel that checks dependencies and publishes events to independent modules, which write to the database, job worker, compliance exports, and dashboards.
A FastAPI kernel reads each module's manifest, resolves a dependency order with cycle detection, and routes domain events between modules through an event bus. A lint check fails the build if one module imports another, so modules only talk through events. Background work runs on a lightweight job worker backed by MongoDB instead of a separate queue. Compliance output covers e-way bill payloads with sandbox and stub modes, GSTR-1 returns, and Tally XML. A React 19 and Vite front end hosts both canvases.
Results
ModularFactory is a working local MVP in its own codebase, generalising patterns first proven in FactoryOS. Seven modules (inventory, orders and dispatch, GST invoicing, RFID asset tracking, people, partners, and purchasing) compose into a live workspace, and compositions save as reusable blueprints. The suite holds more than a thousand backend tests plus Playwright end-to-end journeys. It is not deployed yet.
